Waterbury’s Late Game Surge Comes Just Short in Loss to SaberCats

The Silverbacks found themselves in a five run deficit with two innings left to play. They fought to cut Simsbury’s lead to one, however, could not complete the comeback in the 6-5 loss on Wednesday evening.
Down three with no runs on the board, freshman Brayden Whipple scored Waterbury’s after a Simsbury passed ball. Another offensive surge from Simsbury in the bottom half of the fifth extended their lead to 6-1.
A Joe Fasano single and Bryce Isquith walk set the moment for third baseman Zaid Vohra as he sent a three-run shot over the center field wall. Suddenly, it was now a 6-4 ballgame with one swing.
The seventh inning saw senior backstop Alberto Cantalini double to drive Kyle Parker with two outs to come within a run of Simsbury’s lead. The SaberCats managed to close the door and strand Cantalini on third to seal the win.
Braydon Sturino started the game for the Silverbacks, throwing four innings while allowing two earned runs on two hits. Hayden Klyver and Chase Curran threw three innings in relief for Waterbury.
Waterbury’s next game comes Thursday evening as they host the Hamden Miners.
