In their first home contest of the 2026 season, Waterbury was downed by West Haven by a 9-3 final score. It was the second straight game the Silverbacks have lost to open up the fresh campaign.
An eventful first inning containing three separate Silverback errors in the field led to the Sailors putting up three runs in the top of the first inning. A double in the bottom of the frame by freshman Brayden Whipple drove in two to cut Waterbury’s deficit to 3-2.
West Haven bats continued to jump on Waterbury starter Hayden Klyver as he allowed nine runs on five hits; however, only three of those runs were earned. Tyler Egan and Kyle Parker added three innings of shutout relief for Waterbury. The Waterbury staff did not yield a walk throughout the entire game
The Silverbacks bats cooled down until the bottom of the seventh and final inning after sophomore infielder Tulley Szost grounded into a fielder’s choice which plated Alex Teixeira for the team’s third run. Teixeira stole a base prior to scoring, his second straight game tallying one.
The early mistakes in the field clearly hurt Waterbury in the loss. Only three batters struck out for the Sailors as plenty of outs were responsible on the Silverbacks defense.
Waterbury will look to get into the win column for the first time this summer on Tuesday night as they host the Hamden Miners.
