Outfielder Nolan Risedorf was the difference maker in Waterbury’s 8-0 win over Simsbury in their playoff matchup. Risedorf knocked three base hits and tallied seven total bases while also driving in five runs. The cleanup hitter saved his best performance of the season when it mattered most.
Risedorf opened the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first, bringing home Miles Perez. An error and sacrifice fly brought home two more runs in the inning as the Silverbacks were quickly ahead with a 3-0 lead.
The third inning saw Waterbury add two runs to their lead after Joe Fasano drove in Perez following a Simsbury error. Risedorf knocked in Fasano with an RBI double, one of his two extra base hits on the day.
The nail in the coffin came in the top of the fifth after Risedorf capped off his great day at the plate with a three run home run for his third, fourth and fifth runs batted in for the contest.
As for the pitching, it was a one man wrecking crew for Waterbury as Kevin Cestari pitched a complete game shutout, striking out five and allowing just two hits. The Silverbacks ace pitched his best game of the season in a crucial spot.
Waterbury is peaking at the right time after picking up their fourth win in their last five contests. They face off against Silk City Friday evening as they aim for a third straight playoff win.
