The Silverbacks defeated the Pioneers Thursday night by a final score of 9-4 as backstop Alberto Cantalini homered twice to power Waterbury to their first regular season victory.

Waterbury struck first in the top of the second after the senior catcher sent a solo shot over the center field wall to give the team a 1-0 lead. A grand slam by Western Mass in the bottom of the third were the only runs they’d get on the board on the day. The deficit was cut to one following an RBI single to right by Christian Camp which brought home two runs.

In the sixth inning, the Silverbacks took the lead after three runs were scored on three separate wild pitches. Cantalini, Nolan Risedorf and Brayden Whipple all crossed home plate to give Waterbury a 6-4 advantage with an inning left to play.

Cantalini struck again in the final frame adding insurance with his three-run home run to left field. Waterbury took a 9-4 lead and never looked back.

Freshman starter Kevin Cestari threw four innings and surrendered zero earned runs while striking out seven. Junior reliever Greg Mable succeeded him with three innings of shutout ball while striking out four and picking up the win.

Waterbury prepares for five games in five days as they host the Meriden Riptide Sunday evening at Municipal Stadium.
