The Danbury LakeHounds scored seven runs in the fifth inning, which helped them defeat the Waterbury Silverbacks 11-3 on Monday, which eliminated Waterbury from the CCBL playoffs.
A line out by Zach Drewry, which then led to a run scoring, helped put Waterbury on the board early in the top of the first. Matt Wallin grounded out, which in turn had Danbury tie the game at one in the bottom of the first. An error gave the Silverbacks the lead again, 2-1, in the top of the third. Danbury would yet again tie the game at two in the bottom of the third.
This back and forth then was put to rest as a sacrifice fly by Anthony Hackert gave Danbury the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the fourth. And then the wheels came off for the Silverbacks.
The LakeHounds scored seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Will Granata singled, scoring two runs. Then thanks to errors and walks, the LakeHounds scored 5 more runs.
Maico Cardona hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the sixth for the Silverbacks as they tried to crawl back in the game. But it was not enough.
Kyle Donlon took the loss for Waterbury. The pitcher went four innings, giving up three runs on two hits, striking out two and walking two.
Cardona went 2-for-2 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in.
With this loss, Waterbury is officially eliminated from the playoffs.
